Meeting with other riders
After an early morning shuttle from San Francisco to Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge, the ride starts along the Panoramic Highway and proceeds onto Ridgecrest Blvd to the peak of Mt Tamalpais offering fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay from high above. We descend Mt Tamalpais and turn inland to navigate around Alpine Lake and Nicasio Reservoir meandering our way to the small town of Point Reyes Station where we will enjoy lunch and some award winning cheeses from the Cowgirl Creamery.
After lunch we continue on Sir Francis Drake Blvd all the way to Point Reyes Lighthouse along the open coastal meadows of Point Reyes National Seashore through several working cattle farms. Once at the lighthouse we trade cycling shoes for hiking shoes to take a light hiking tour of the Point Reyes Headlands and the lighthouse. Our lodging this evening is at Point Reyes Lodge and cyclists will have the option to either shuttle to the lodge, or go full EFI by riding back from the lighthouse to add another 21 miles to the day for a total of 87 miles.
Built in 1988 and designed to complement the turn-of-the-century architecture of the quaint town of Olema, the Point Reyes Seashore Lodge and Restaurant offers 22 rooms and two private cottages bordering the Point Reyes National Seashore Park on the delightful Olema Creek.
All rooms offer private bathrooms, telephones, radiant heat warmed floors, down comforters and pillows, as well as views of Olema Creek, the lush lawns and gardens, the Inverness Ridge and Mt. Wittenberg.

Departing the Point Reyes Station area in the morning, we turn north to ride on Shoreline Hwy along the Tomales Bay and then head onto quiet roads through the Chileno Valley. We will stop at Goat Rock State Beach - Sonoma Coast State Park to enjoy lunch on the rocky California coastline and perhaps dip the feet into the cool, refreshing Pacific Ocean.
After lunch we continue north and soon take on one of the first big climbs of the tour up Meyers Grade Rd: a 4-mile Category 2 ascent with grades up to 17%! But the climbing will be worth it as ride along the ridge top rewards with grand views in all directions. The last 3.5 miles offers a screaming descent down to our accommodations at the Timber Cove Inn. Optionally those wanting to skip this last climb and descent of the day can continue along the Coast Highway directly to the Timber Cove Inn.
Perched on a dramatic bluff high above the Pacific Ocean lies Timber Cove: an iconic, re-imagined, one-of-a-kind hotel situated within California's ruggedly breathtaking Sonoma coastline. Timber Cove is a magical place where stately redwoods pay homage before the vastness of the sea.
The newly renovated structure retains the iconic architecture and authenticity of the original 1960's legend while bestowing the comforts and amenities of a new hotel. The hotel features 46 newly designed guest rooms, including eight premium suites, which offer a variety of ocean views, sunset vistas, and refreshing forest panoramas.
83 MILES, ELEVATION GAIN/LOSS: +6130 ft / -6045 ft
Our third day of the tour offers the most climbing of the week with a mix of Category 2 and Category 3 climbs which will help cyclists get in top shape for the upcoming GranFondo on Saturday. The first Cat 2 climb up Fort Ross Rd comes soon after departure from Timber Cove Inn with a 2.5 mile ascent with grades nearing 17%. The following 16 miles is along rolling terrain with a mix of smaller Cat 3 climbs until the next Cat 2 climb at 5 miles in length.
The final climb of the day is another Cat 2 at 4 miles in length with grades reaching nearly 16%. With all the climbing done, the reward is a guide prepared gourmet lunch at Gustafson Family Vineyards just past the summit of this final climb. The last 20 miles of the days ride descends 2,500 feet with almost no elevation gain through the Dry Creek Valley past numerous vineyards and ends in Healdsburg, California where we check into the Healdsburg Hotel, our lodging for the evening. An option exists to add 20 miles and 2,220’ in elevation gain to this ride for a total of 87 miles.
Hotel Healdsburg encompasses the Sonoma wine country’s simplicity and charm. The Hotel is set on the western edge of Healdsburg's historic town plaza, and guests can enjoy some of the world's finest vineyards, restaurants and shops within minutes of the front steps.
Beautifully appointed guest rooms, country gardens, pool, and the luxurious spa provide a tranquil setting for guests to relax within the hotel grounds. Dining is a highlight of the Hotel where guests can savor Sonoma County's bounty of extraordinary wines and fresh seasonal ingredients at acclaimed Chef Charlie Palmer's Dry Creek Kitchen.

Geared as a more casual day of riding after the climbing from yesterday, this day’s route pierces straight across the heart of the region’s major grape producing valleys of Alexander Valley, Knights Valley and most famously, Napa Valley. With one small climb and little elevation gain, this will be a glorious day to spin the legs through this world famous wine country region along the Silverado Trail.
There will be numerous opportunities to stop at some of the many dozens of wineries along the way to Napa to sample wine and to have lunch. The day ends in Napa where we check into Napa River Inn and then hit the town for post-ride fun, food and of course, more wine!
This historic property in downtown Napa is situated among the bustling renaissance of Downtown Napa's Riverfront District and close to the Oxbow Public Market. The waterfront location within the Historic Napa Mill grants walkabout access to the neighborhood with specialty shops, gourmet restaurants and world-renowned wines all waiting to be uncorked.
The historical charms of the past blend with the modern day amenities of today at the Napa River Inn. Sixty-six guest rooms spread between 3 diverse buildings along the waterfront offer a one of a kind experience with easy access to Napa's Downtown district.
